INDUSTRY PROGRAMME

The production of TV series of all genres and formats is growing exponentially everywhere, Slovenia included. Thus grows the need for a thorough inspection of this field–to face the current state and acknowledge the good and the bad. What are the conditions for good production, who is motivated for it? How can we keep up with the growing production? Are there enough skilled staff in Slovenia to ensure good results? All stakeholders strive for high quality. Can it be achieved? When and how?

With those and other questions in mind, we have decided to make the topic of series the centre of the industry programme this year. We will strive to shed light on the issue from all possible angles and establish a fruitful critical distance, avoiding any judging.

THE DANCE WORKERS SECTION DAY

Screening of the dance movie shorts nominated for LOK awards, followed by a Q&A with renowned experts

The screenings of the dance shorts are split into three sections. After each section, there will follow a relaxed Q&A with experts in the audiovisual and performative arts field. The Q&A is intended for the creative teams and performers of the nominated dance films who wish to discuss their work and get feedback from various sources.

“CONFRONTATIONS: BODY ON CAMERA”

A panel: Dance films through the choreographer’s body and the director’s camera

This panel seeks to address the many questions surrounding the position of dance creators within the audiovisual arts field. What is the role of the choreographer in a dance film? How is the relationship between the director and the choreographer established, built and shaped? Who has the autonomy with regard to making decisions about the choreography plot, execution and meaning in audiovisual work? How, when and why does it come to differences, oppositions and compromises between the choreographer and the director? How do dance creators in audiovisual works deal with working conditions on set? How to produce a high quality dance film when there is a lack of basic funding?

THE PUBLIC’S AWARD LOK

The Dance Workers Section will give out the public’s award LOK that will be voted for on June 17th, 2021 by the visitors to the industry program. The voting will occur after the screenings on location, and on the festival’s webpage until June 17th, 2021.

“IN THERAPY”

A panel: The inclusion of actors in the TV series production

Working conditions quickly adapt according to budget and time restrictions, while the quality of the end product is mostly dependent on working conditions. What impact do actors have on the quality? What are the basic requirements for decent work? What would be the ideal circumstances? What do actors agree with in terms of working conditions? What may actors demand? How may the end product impact an actor’s further career? Does that matter? Where do we find motivation for TV series work from daily soap operas to crime series, dramas and sitcoms?

“OUR DAILY BREAD”

A panel: A holistic insight into Slovenian series production

As there is an increase in series production, series are becoming an important area of work and income to an increasingly wider group of workers that have interest in them. In series production, the commercial aspect is usually emphasized–but that does not always bring a guarantee for success. What are the conditions and limitations of series production in Slovenia? What is the timeline of the production from the contractor and the screenplay to the production and final distribution along with promotion? Is there a sufficient production chain in place and are the sectors involved of a satisfactory expert level? Is there a need for new knowledge, education? Is Slovenia ready for the appetite of strong international audiovisual corporations? We shall evaluate the state of Slovenian series, discussing our specifics and the influence of international series on our production.

“AS MY UNCLES TOLD ME”

A panel: Speech in Slovenian audiovisual work

Speech in Slovenian film and generally in audiovisual works is a very fraught, elusive subject. The immediacy of audiovisual work calls for a kind of speech that will resonate with the widest possible public. Can film handle formal speech? Is there such a thing as neutral Slovene? When can the local be universal? To what extent is speech in audiovisual work in the domain of language editors and to what extent in the domain of authors’ personal taste? What does the public want to hear?
